Roles of F0 and Closure in the Voiced-Voiceless Distinction for Initial Stops in Wu Dialects—Take Shanghainese for example

چکیده
Most previous works on acoustic cues for the voicedvoiceless distinction of initial stops have focused on non-tonal languages such as English. The present study seeks to determine some possible cues for voicing perception of initial stops in a tonal language—Shanghainese. Perceptual experiments were conducted using stimuli which were created based on natural sounds in the initial position and the medial position of two-syllable words respectively. The results show that F0 is critical in perceiving voicing on initial stops in initial position, but only has a weak effect in medial position. Another acoustic cue—closure, is proved to be an important cue for voiced-voiceless distinction of initial stops in medial position. The data indicate that there is a significant trading relationship between these two cues for voicing perception in medial position.

Speakers of tonal and non-tonal Korean dialects use different cue weightings in the perception of the three-way laryngeal stop contrast
The current study investigated the perception of the three-way distinction among Korean voiceless stops in non-tonal Seoul and tonal Kyungsang Korean. The question addressed is whether listeners from these two dialects differ in the way they perceive the three stops. Forty-two Korean listeners (21 each from Seoul and South Kyungsang) were tested in a perception experiment with stimuli in which ...
متن کاملEffects of tone on the three-way laryngeal distinction in Korean: An acoustic and aerodynamic comparison of the Seoul and South Kyungsang dialects
The three-way laryngeal distinction among voiceless Korean stops has been well documented for the Seoul dialect. The present study compares the acoustic and aerodynamic properties of this stop series between two dialects, non-tonal Seoul and tonal South Kyungsang Korean. Sixteen male Korean speakers (eight from Seoul and eight from Kyungsang) participated. Measures collected included VOT, f0 at...
متن کاملLenition of intervocalic stops in Amazonian Spanish bilinguals
Lenition can be considered a process of consonant weakening, such that there is less contrast between consonants and adjacent vowels. In the evolution of Spanish from Latin, the lenition process for stops follows a predictable pattern in the direction from voiceless stops to voiced stops to fricative and approximant realizations, which may end in deletion in the most extreme cases. While presen...
متن کاملTone production, tone perception and Kammu tonogenesis
The Northern and Western dialects of the Mon-Khmer language Kammu use fundamental frequency to distinguish words, while the Eastern dialect relies on the contrastive voicing of initial consonants to distinguish words which display an F0 contrast in the other dialects. The production and perception of tones in the three dialects is investigated, using recordings and perception tests. As expected...
متن کاملAcoustic Correlates of Voicing and Gemination in Bangla
The goal of this paper is to conduct an acoustic phonetic investigation of both primary and secondary cues that aid in the distinction between voiced and voiceless geminates in Bangla. Results of the statistical analyses examining both duration and nondurational correlates show that besides closure duration secondary cues such as the amplitude of the stop release burst and the fundamental frequ...
